Unfortunately the peri-urban nature of the Maltese Islands limits the sites and habitats where avifauna can integrate and colonise. The lack of forest land and fresh water sources limits the potential habitat areas for birds. Urban sprawl and land reclamation have led to drastic reductions in numbers of some wetland birds.
Birdpark Malta has been designed to provide a protected wetland habitat with trees, shrubs, reeds, sedges, grasses and rushes supported by fresh water plains and watercourses. This wide variety of marshland flora has matured into a balanced open eco-system where wildlife thrives in an abundance of food and shelter. The site is an ideal resting, feeding and breeding site for migratory birds throughout the year.
